Permanent Field Observation to Analyse the Competition of Grasses in Subalpine Meadows (Harz)

A mountain meadow was laid at a hill top below the Brocken summit in the Harz mountains in order to watch the rivalry of the main grass species as Draht Schmiele ( Aira flexuosa ), Borstgras ( Nardus stricta ) and Wolliges Reitgras ( Calamagrostis villosa ). Aira flexuosa developed remarkably quick while Nardus stricta very slowly closed up the test areas, but formed relative stable permanent stocks. Calamagrostis villosa grew very slowly at raw granite soils. But if the grassy top layer of the soil that is rich of humus was not removed, Calamagrostis villosa developed rich permanent stocks. Mountain meadows which are not entirely grown over gave place for the immigration of Habichtskräuter ( Hieracium species ), Bärlappe ( Lycophytina ), heathers ( Calluna ) and also the Heidelbeere ((blueberry, Vaccinium myrtillus ). Following natures own laws and dynamic processes the meadows will change eventually into forests. Measures are discussed like extensive cattle grazing, moving, or the influence of deer to preserve the mountain meadows. In the centre and undisturbed area of the National Park the further development will produce forests with perhaps small glades while the mountain meadows at the Brocken summit will be preserved rich in many species by special measures and care.
