Distance library services in Canada: observations and overview of some of the issues

Pages 45-62 | Published online: 02 Sep 2006

Abstract

Canada's vast geographic size and distributed population, coupled with the shift to a knowledge-based society and the tremendous technological explosion, have resulted in a dramatic transformation to the distance learning culture. This shift has provided many benefits for distance students and potential students in terms of greater access to education, information and the opportunity to engage in life long learning. In this environment, educators and distance librarians have a significant role in facilitating a positive academic experience for distance students. However, for institutions engaged in distance learning, there are various issues related to the management of the technology, pedagogical models, student learning expectations, library services, and support services. An overview and observations of this distance environment, its benefits and the issues, along with standards of practice, are discussed. Speculative comments about a few recent developments indicative of possible future trends are put forward for consideration. The conclusion emphasizes the advantages of the virtual distance learning culture and the critical leadership role of the librarian.
