Promotion of psychological well-being of small and family business owners

Abstract

Objective: To identify various factors that lead to stress and influence the current psychological status of small and family business owners in the south west of Western Australia. In addition this paper explores the level of awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and current coping strategies used to promote further positive psychological well being.

Method: Questionnaire survey of 2000 randomly selected businesses was conducted. Detailed demographic details, parts of occupational stress indicator, depression inventory and alcohol consumption questionnaire were used.

Results: Nearly 500 questionnaires were completed and returned. The data is being analysed using various appropriate statistical methods. Some interesting initial findings have emerged. The data analysis will be completed by the end of January 2000. This project is anticipated to answer a number of interesting questions which have not been previously studied. The project is supported by Healthways Starter grant.
