Abstract

Histopathological and mycological characteristics of a case of mycetoma caused by Phialophora jeanselmei are described. In culture, yeast forms were seen initially but were superceded by chains of moniliform hyphae. Spores were produced from darkened protuberances on the hyphae or from the tips and sides of simple or branched conidiophores. Flask-shaped phialids with apical collars were present, singly or in clusters. Dark, septate bodies, frequently observed on cornmeal agar, have not been previously described for P. jeanselmei.
