Abstract
Aspergillosis was diagnosed in 8 of 50 wild nestling double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus). Typical granulomatous nodules were observed in the lungs and on the air sacs. Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the infected tissues of the birds and their nesting material. Amphotericin B was administered as inhalant therapy, in addition to the removal of nesting material and disinfection of holding cages.
It was concluded that aspergillosis is an endemic disease among wild cormorants in South Dakota and that during the course of this study, stress did not appear to be an important factor in the development of this disease.
Zusammenfassung
Bei 8 von 50 kurz vorher eingefangenen doppelkammigen Kormoranan (Phalocrocax auritus) wurde eine Aspergillose festgestellt. In den Lungen und in der Wand der Luftsäcke der betreffenden Tiere fanden sich typische granulomatöse Knoten. Von diesen sowie von den Nestern der erkrankten Tiere wurde Aspergillus fumigatus kultiviert. Die Nester wurden beseitigt und die Käfige desinfiziert; ausserdem wurden die Tiere mit einem Amphotericin B-Aerosol behandelt.
Vermutlich ist Aspergillose bei den wildlebenden Kormoranen in Süd-Dakota endemisch. Durch die Stress-Situationen bei und nach dem Einfangen der Tiere mag der Ausbruch der Krankheit begünstigt worden sein.
