Activities of Aspartate and Alanine Aminotransferases and Alkaline Phosphatase in Sera of Healthy Subjects

Abstract

The activities of serum aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1, L-aspartate: 2-oxoglutartate aminotransferase, ASAT) and alanine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.2, L-alanine: 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, ALAT) were determined in the sera of 1484 apparently healthy subjects using kinetic methods according to the Scandinavian recommendation (33). In the adult sera the mean activity of ASAT was 21.4±6.4 U/1 for women and 24.4±6.1 U/1 (+37 °C) for men. The corresponding values of ALAT were 19.4±7.5 and 21.8±8.3 U/1 (+37 °C). ASAT activity was highest in sera of newborn, decreasing in childhood with the increase in age. ALAT values of children did not significantly differ from those of adult women except for those of newborns, which were lower. The activity of serum alkaline phosphates (EC 3.1.3.1, orthophosphoric monoester phosphohydrolase, AP) in 1.0 mol/1 diethanolamine buffer was determined in the sera of 1631 apparently healthy subjects by a continuous-flow method using a reagent mixture according to the Scandinavian recommendation (33). In adult sera the mean activity of AP was 107.5±38.4 U/1 for women and 121.6±57.9 U/1 (+37 °C) for men. The sera of children showed significantly higher activities up to 1000 U/1 or even more. ASAT, ALAT, and AP activities were also determined during normal pregnancy and during treatment with oral contraceptives. On the basis of activities determined and taking into account the asymmetrical distributions of the values, the reference values for serum ASAT, ALAT, and AP activities were estimated for various age groups of subjects.
