Expedient and highly efficient synthesis of previously unknown 2-methyl-5-nitrobenzo[b]thiophene has been developed, furnishing the target product in four steps with 87% overall yield. Bromination, acetylation, and reduction of the target molecule showed its potency as an essential building block for construction of various organic assemblies.
