N-Ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline (EEDQ) has been used as an efficient and convenient reagent for the one-pot synthesis of β-lactams by [2+2] ketene–imine cycloaddition (Staudinger reaction).
