Reactions of 2-amino-5-oxo-2-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromen-3-carbonitrile (1a) with a variety of reagents leading to the synthesis of chromens have been investigated to explore the use of this exceptionally reactive nitrile in heterocyclic synthesis.
