Abstract
In 1931, Schonberg et al. reported that phenyllithium reacts with 4,4,5,5-tetraphenyl-1,3-dithiolane (1) in ether to give tetraphenylethylene (2); 1 lithium thiophenoxide was
later detected as a second product of this reaciton.2 Many years later, Seebach commented upon the instability of 1,3-dithiolane anions, and suggested the following fragementation mechanism for Schönberg's reaction.3
