In the course of ongoing synthetic investigations we required a substantial quantity of the Wichterle annulation reagent, 1,3-dichloro-2-butene (2),1 which is currently unavailable from commercial sources in the U.S. The most practical laboratory preparation of this material appeared to be that of Hatch and Perry,2 starting with ethyl acetoacetate:
