Abstract

The direction of aldol cyclization in 2 is strongly influenced by reaction conditions. Through use of fluoride ion in tetrahydrofuran, thermodynamic control sets in to deliver predominantly 8 (after silylation). This procedure is useful for polyquinane construction.
