Abstract
Reaction of chloroacetonitrile with 2-chlorobenzimidazole gave 2-chloro-1-cyanomethyl benzimidazole (2) from which 3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazino[4,3-a]benzimidazole (1) was prepared. The presence of a hydrazino group on the carbon adjacent to an -NH group in this molecule makes it an important synthon for the synthesis of a variety of nitrogen heterocycles.
