Abstract
The bicyclo [5.3.1] undecane derivative 12, an important structural element of the taxane diterpenes, was prepared by photocycloaddition of the bicyclo [3.3.1] dione 9 to allene followed by cyclobutane ring opening (the de Mayo reaction).
