Carbon linked tetradentate chelators based on kojic acid were synthesised by a modification of the Mannich reaction. Suppression of the aminomethylation process favours the formation of dimeric, Bakerlite-type structures.

The assignment was determined from the proton NMR spectrum of the commercially available kojic acid (Fluka A. G.).
