Abstract
The use of biodiesel as an alternative fuel can be a solution for reducing emissions from internal combustion engines. The present study aims to optimise the start of injection timing on the performance and emissions of biodiesel-fuelled engines. In this study, six starts of injection timings from −40° up to 0° were numerically investigated. The error of the numerical results did not exceed 10% which ensured the computational method validity. Based on the outcomes of the work, tuning a start of injection timing angle to −30° of the crankshaft angle before the top dead centre results in high performance and low emissions of engines fuelled by biodiesel. Overall, the results showed an increase of 65% in the brake torque (BT), a decrease of 28.57% in fuel consumption and an emission decline of 71% in the particulate matter with a start of injection timing angle of −30°.
