The hypothenar radial arch and parathenar loop in palmar dermal topology: sex, bimanual and regional variation in samples from the British Isles

Summary

Consideration is given to the regular recording of parathenar distal loops (Pa) and hypothenar radial arches (A^r) in palmar dermal topology. Frequencies are given for four British populations (the North Pennine Dales, the Mid Welsh Borderland, Pembrokeshire and Ireland) and regional variation noted together with sex and bimanual differences. Both Pa and A^r occur infrequently in normal populations, generally in less than 5% of individuals, Pa significantly less than A^r. Both attributes are similar in that they are significantly more common on right than left hands and in females than males. Three out of twelve comparisons between the North Pennine Dales, Welsh Borderland and Pembrokeshire data attained formal significance, in each case in the males. The former two regions were distinguished for both Pa and A^r; the latter two for A^r. This is more than expected by chance at the 5% level.

L'attention est attirée sur l'intérêt de noter les boucles distales du parathénar (Pa) et les arcs radiaux de l'hypothénar (A^r) en topologie des dermatoglyphes palmaires. Les fréquences en sont données dans quatre populations britanniques (les North Pennine Dales, le Mid Welsh Borderland, le Pembrokeshire et l'Irlande) et la variation régionale est signalée ainsi que les différences sexuelles et bimanuelles. Pa comme A^r ne s'observent pas fréquemment dans des populations normales, généralement chez moins de 5% des individus, Pa significativement moins que A^r. Les deux attributs sont semblables en ce qu'ils sont significativement plus fréquents à la main droite qu'à la main gauche et dans le sexe féminin que dans le masculin. Trois de douze comparaisons entre les échantillons des North Pennine Dales, le Welsh Borderland et le Pembrokeshire atteignent le niveau de signification, dans le sexe masculin dans tous les cas.
