Age at menarche in relation to adult body size and physique

Summary

The relationship of early and late menarche with adult body dimensions has been studied on a sample of 147 young adult women drawn from an urban Punjabi population of Chandigarh and Ludhiana. The results indicate that girls with early menarche (age 10 to 11) have significantly smaller skeletal dimensions (both longitudinal and transverse) and more subcutaneous fat than those with average or late menarche. The girls with late menarche have on average more height for weight than early maturers. Results indicate that there is a biological determinant of the observed association between menarcheal age and fatness and adult body size.

Zusammenfassung

Die Verknüpfung von früher und später Menarche mit erwachsenen Körperdimensionen wurde an einer Stickprobe von 147 jungen erwachsenen Frauen aus einer städtischen Bevöllkerung von Punjabi in Chandigarh und Ludhiana untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß die Mädchen mit früher Menarche signifikant kleinere Skelettdimensionen haben (sowohl in Längs- wie in Querrichtung) und mehr Unterhaufett also jene mit durchschnittlicher Menarche. Die Mädchen mit später Menarche haben im Durchschnitt eine aufs Gewicht bezogene größere Körperhöhe als frühreifende. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß es einen biologischen Einfluß auf die beobachtete Verknüpfung von Menarchealter un d Fettverteilung und erwachsener Knochengröße gibt.

Résumé

L'association entre dimensions corporelles adultes et ménarche précoce ou tardive a été étudiée chez un échantillon de 147 jeunes femmes adultes provenant de populations urbaines de Chandigarh et Ludhiana au Punjab. Les résultats montrent que les filles à ménarche précoce (à 10–11 ans), ont des dimensions squelettiques (longitudinales et transversales) significativement plus petites et plus de graisse souscutanée que celles qui ont eu leur ménarche à un áge moyen. Les filles à ménarche tardive présentent en moyenne un rapport stature/poids plus élevé que celles dont la puberté est précoce. Les résultats indiquent qu'il y a un déterminant biologique à l'association observée entre áge à la ménarche, adiposité et taille des os de l'adulte.
