The idea for this special issue emerged out of The Australian Academy of Social Sciences-sponsored workshop titled “Second Generation Migrants: Contested Definitions and Realities” convened by Zlatko Skrbiš and Loretta CitationBaldassar in November 2005 at The University of Queensland. This workshop grew out of a TRACS (Transnationalisms, Racisms, Communities and Settlements) Research Centre initiative on “Generations of Migration” hosted in August 2004 by the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Western Australia. We would like to express thanks to the Journal of Intercultural Studies for their support in preparing this issue, to workshop participants for valuable discussion on the theme and to Susanne Wessendorf for her helpful comments on an earlier version of this introduction.
