ABSTRACT
In response to the needs of terminally ill patients and their families, hospice programs emerged and became a significant component in the continuum of long term care services. Initiatives to develop new hospices as well as efforts to maintain existing programs are facing serious challenges. One strategy for enhancing the capabilities of hospices to address these challenges is to learn from the experiences of established programs. The research presented in this report seeks to enhance these capabilities through an in-depth case study exploration of the experiences of sixteen successful hospice programs. Topics include: hospice characteristics, key developmental events, growth patterns, and future strategies for maintenance.
