Abstract

In this paper, we describe a conceptual framework in which to study the language development of children who acquire language through augmented means. This framework considers a range of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may influence a child's ability to acquire language when speech is not a viable output mode. Intrinsic factors include biological and psychological considerations while extrinsic factors encompass modalities, devices, and instructional considerations.
