Filamentous Green Algae for Radiobiological Study

&
Pages 319-330 | Received 17 Dec 1959, Published online: 03 Jul 2009

Summary

Young sporelings of the fresh-water green alga Oedogonium cardiacum are well suited to studies of the effects of irradiation on cell proliferation. The motile zoospores give rise to unbranched filaments of large uninucleate cells. Spores lose their ability to produce viable daughter cells after lower x-ray doses than have been found necessary to produce similar effects in some other green algae.
