Strontium-90 and Calcium in Milk of Miniature Swine

Summary

The ⁹⁰Sr and calcium contents of diet, plasma, and milk were determined for nine young adult primiparous miniature swine fed 25 or 125 μc of ⁹⁰Sr daily. The mean ⁹⁰Sr/Ca of the milk was 0·10 that of the diet; the mean ⁹⁰Sr/Ca of plasma was 0·23 that of the diet; and the mean ⁹⁰Sr/Ca of milk was 0·38 that of the plasma. With increasing time after parturition, the daily content of ⁹⁰Sr in milk increased progressively from 1 to 2 per cent to 3 per cent and more of the ⁹⁰Sr ingested each day by the dam. The calcium content of milk also increased with time after parturition, but the ⁹⁰Sr and calcium concentrations changed in such a way that the ratio of the ⁹⁰Sr/Ca of the milk increased relative to the ⁹⁰Sr/Ca of diet.
