Summary
The effect of resecting 70 per cent of combined ileum and jejunum on the survival time of rats subjected to x-irradiation of the remaining ileum and jejunum was studied. The variables tested were interval between irradiation and operation (7, 15, 30, 60 days) and magnitude of exposure to the exteriorized gut (1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 and 3500 R).
The resected animals were less sensitive to irradiation than were sham-resected animals. The survival time was enhanced by increasing the time between surgery and irradiation, and was decreased by increasing the exposure. Possible mechanisms are discussed.
