Summary
A study was made of morphological and cytological changes in the spleen of 1- and 7-day-old chickens irradiated 24 hours before, or 48 hours after, antigenic stimulation.
The results confirm our previous observations that the chickens' ability to respond to antigenic stimulation by the plasma-cell reaction develops in the first days after hatching. Irradiation 24 hours before antigenic stimulation was found to inhibit the development of plasma-cell reaction in the spleen of 1-week-old chickens.
Irradiation of young, immunologically-immature chickens markedly delayed the development of germinal centres in the spleen, which constitute an important part of the immune system.
