Summary
Gamma-irradiation of ichthyocol solutions caused extensive intermolecular cross-linking of the collagen molecules, leading at higher doses to gelation. From the effect of added free radical scavengers on the gelation dose it was concluded that only the hydrogen atom initiates the cross-linking process. The reaction constant K (H· + collagen) was found to be about 1010 M−1 s−1. Four or less hydrogen atoms are needed to establish an intermolecular cross-link.
It is suggested that the hydrogen atoms can reduce some special sites on the macromolecule to groups bearing an aldehyde function. Such groups are also involved in natural cross-links in matured collagen.
