Recognising medical reasons for falling

Pages 135-140 | Published online: 10 Jul 2009

Abstract

When assessing older people with postural instability the physiotherapist may suspect the presence of an underlying medically treatable cause. Posing a series of questions, first about the circumstances of any fall, and second about the general condition of the patient, may help to identify such factors. Identifying treatable cardiovascular conditions that can lead to syncope and recurrent falls is of particular benefit.
