Abstract
Background: Until recently there were no hospital services for people with psychiatric problems in Tibet.
Aims: To provide an assessment of the next steps in developing psychiatric treatment in Tibet.
Method: Review of the literature, a survey and a diagnostic check of people currently in contact with health services for a psychiatric disorder.
Results: More than 75% of patients received an inaccurate diagnosis and inappropriate or inadequate psychiatric care.
Conclusion: Services must be developed based on current research, evidence of need and also by building resources within the country through psychiatric training and continuing medical education.
