ABSTRACT
This article presents the timber marks found on one of the Ses Llumetes shipwreck’s frames (1st century AD; Mallorca, Spain). From this find, a review over time of this type of archaeological evidence is developed, comparing the use, meaning and interpretations in the different comparative contexts found in the Mediterranean. Timber marks on vessels are particularly rare to find in underwater archaeological context, especially for the Roman Period. This makes the discovery of the Ses Llumetes shipwreck an important contribution to the existing examples. The location of a mark in a specific location in a vessel can mean that its interpretation can vary, and also shows relevant details about the people behind this action. In particular, the analysis of the tria nomina represented by the Ses Llumetes mark has proved to be especially important for investigating where the ship might have been built.

Este artículo presenta las marcas en la madera halladas en una de las cuadernas del pecio Ses Llumetes (siglo I AD, Mallorca, España). A partir de este hallazgo, se desarrolla una revisión a lo largo del tiempo de este tipo de evidencia arqueológica, comparando el uso, significado e interpretaciones en los diferentes contextos comparables hallados en el Mediterráneo. Las marcas en maderas empleadas para la construcción de embarcaciones son particularmente raras de encontrar en un contexto arqueológico subacuático, especialmente para el período romano. Por eso, el descubrimiento del pecio Ses Llumetes supone una importante contribución a los ejemplos existentes. La ubicación de una marca en un sitio específico de una embarcación hace que su interpretación varíe y también muestra detalles relevantes sobre las personas detrás de esta acción. En particular, el análisis de la tria nomina representada por la marca de Ses Llumetes ha demostrado ser de especial importancia para investigar dónde pudo haber sido construido el barco.

يعرض هذا المقال علامات الأخشاب التي وُجدت على أحد إطارات حُطام سفينة سيس لوميتس (القرن الأول الميلادي، مايوركا، إسبانيا). ومن هذا الاكتشاف، تم تطوير المراجعة التي تمت مع مرور الوقت لهذا النوع من الأدلة الأثرية، مُقارناً الاستخدام والمعنى والتفسيرات في السياقات المختلفة والمقارنة التي وُجدت في البحر الأبيض المتوسط. ومن الجدير بالذكر انه من النادر العثور على علامات الأخشاب في السُفن وخصوصاً في السياق الأثري التحتمائي وخاصة في العصر الروماني، جاعلاً من اكتشاف حُطام سفينة سيس لوميتس مساهمة هامة للأمثلة المتواجدة. ومن جانب آخر، أن لموقع العلامة في مكان معين في السفينة الامكانية لأعطاء تفسيرات متفاوتة بجانب إظهار التفاصيل ذات الصلة حول الأشخاص الذين يقفون وراء هذا الفعل. وعلى وجه الخصوص، لقد أثبت التحليل الذي تم للثلاث أسماء التي تمثلها علامة سيس لوميتس أهمية هذه العلامة وبشكل خاص للتحقق من المكان الذي بُنيت فيه هذه السفينة.

1 For these reasons, we share the opinion of Tran (Citation2014, p. 169), who rejects the hypothesis once put forward by Manacorda (Citation2005, p. 27), that the marks at the circus of Arles or the RRFG of the Saint-Gervais 3 wreck are the names of redemptores, contractors linked to the timber trade.
