Jewish Emancipation: A History across Five Centuries

David Sorkin, Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2019. 511 pages, ISBN: 9780691164946

Notes

1 For instance, there is a blanket and unnuanced adoption of the narrative of abiding discrimination against Mizrahi Jews, eliding very well-known instances of high state officials of either Mizrahi or Palestinian Israeli parentage, among them Supreme Court justices, government coalition members and cabinet ministers, and three former chiefs of the IDF general staff. We are given figures for casualties incurred during riots, without any context for knowing whether such figures are high or low, and by what standards; or whether these are one-time events or randomly chosen from a continuous stream of such events.

2 For instance: “The [Jewish] day school movement began as a form of religiously legitimized ‘white flight’ from desegregation equivalent to the South’s ‘white academies’” (p. 351).
