Abstract

Quantitative methods have played a dominant and important role in the scientific understanding of natural recovery from stuttering. However, the nature and process of recovery from stuttering has additional elements for which an alternative research approach such as qualitative methods is well-suited. This paper examines the role that the qualitative approach can and has played in the investigation of recovery from stuttering without treatment. Past and present quantitative and qualitative studies are reviewed and future research directions are discussed.
