A sacerdotal politics: Yves Bonnefoy’s reforging of W. B. Yeats

by Kathryn Wills, Eugene, Oregon, Pickwick Publications, 2023, 260 pp.

Notes

1 Wills identifies Yeats’s own source material, whether given directly or by allusion in his poems, and shows how he has ‘reforged’ them into his own oeuvre.

2 Yeats’ fascination with occult religion persisted through his life from college days onwards.

3 It was drawn from Schubert.

4 By way of aside Bonnefoy translated (‘reforged’) Shakespeare’s Hamlet in ‘five different translations … each using a different version of the dialectical process of negotiating between ideas from the source and target texts’ (11).
