Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the toxic effects of buprenorphine (BUP) on hematological and serum biochemical parameters of female rats and their pups. Lactating rats received BUP 0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg subcutaneously for 21 days. Then, the female rats and their pups were anesthetized. Their blood samples were collected to assess hematological parameters and serum biochemical parameters. BUP decreased the hematocrit value and the percentage of lymphocytes (p < .05) but increased the percentage of neutrophils (p < .01) in pups exposed to BUP (0.3 mg/kg) versus the controls. We showed that some hematological parameters are altered in pups exposed to BUP solely via breastmilk.
