Intrapartum care update courses

Abstract

There is a government initiative to reduce obstetric litigation by 25% and there is a new CNST requirement for all staff to undertake CTG training and fire drills on a 6-monthly basis. We have developed a locally based course which fulfils CNST requirements for both CTG training and fire drills. It is paper-based and simple to distribute. Low apgar scores were compared retrospectively to 5 years previously. One hundred per cent of midwives, including community and bank midwives, and all medical staff participated in one of the six courses per year for the year 2001 and we are on course for the same for 2002. There has been a significant reduction in the number of low apgar scores since the introduction of the course.
