Abstract

As knowledge and understanding in the field of augmentative communication increases, professionals have become increasingly aware of the value of involving family members in developing, using and adapting an augmentative communication system. Parents bring different levels of knowledge and skills, as well as different feelings and levels of acceptance, to this process. Team members need to understand the strengths, stresses and needs of the family in order to work together effectively. The time of initial evaluation and recommendation for an augmentative communication system provides ideal opportunities for engaging families. Families need professional guidance, and professionals need family input to determine the most effective communication system for their clients. Parents often need assistance with the difficult and time-consuming process of locating funding for equipment purchase. Moreover, once a working relationship is established, families will continue to rely on professionals in many areas. As clients' communication skills increase over time, systems will need adaptation and revision; therefore the relationship between families and professionals is ongoing. A cooperative effort supports both the client and the family, and contributes to the successful use of the augmentative communication system.
