Interaction Strategies

Pages 107-122 | Published online: 29 Jul 2009

Abstract

Successful interaction with a nonverbal, physically handicapped child depends greatly on the conversational partner's knowledge of the child's communication system. This paper describes basic components of communicative interaction, and differences between spoken and nonverbal, augmented communication. Ways in which these differences influence interactions and strategies to facilitate communication with augmented communicators are discussed. Finally, a series of personal commentaries is presented.
