Is the Small for Gestational Age, Term Infant at Risk for Developmental Delay?

Abstract

This article contains a selected review of the literature dealing with the small for gestational age, term infant and child. The definition of the small for gestational age, term infant and the possible causes are outlined. The review is focused on studies in which motor, interactive and learning differences between small for gestational age, term infants and children, and normal birth weight infants and children have been found. Evidence is presented of risk for developmental delay for the small for gestational age, term population and suggestions made that this group be targeted for future research, evaluation, follow-up, and intervention by physical and occupational therapists.
