Abstract

The KIDS + 3 chart with graph format similar to the KIDS chart (Kansas Infant Development Screen) is a new developmental screen for preschool children, 2 to 5 years of age. Selection of items, preliminary field testing of 186 children from 18 to 69 months of age to confirm normal values, and subsequent arrangement of 61 developmental items into 6 age groupings are discussed. Concurrent criterion-related validity was established by testing 70 additional preschoolers. Interobserver reliability was conducted with 29 children and scores of 110 children were used for reliability in the form of internal consistency of the KIDS + 3 chart. This new chart provides physicians, other health care workers and preschool teachers with a convenient developmental screen both simple to use and to interpret to parents.
