School Performance of Children who Have Experienced Maltreatment

Pages 81-89 | Published online: 29 Jul 2009

Abstract

Research has shown that children who have experienced maltreatment are at increased risk of negative developmental outcomes, including difficulties with development of secure attachment relationships and effective peer relationships. However, until recently, few studies have examined the effects of maltreatment on the school performance of children in elementary school through high school. This review highlights published studies that shed light on this question. The need for further research and intervention on the part of occupational therapists who work in school systems is discussed.
