SMOKING CESSATION AMONG PERSONS IN RECOVERY

Abstract

The literature on smoking cessation for those in recovery from other drug use is reviewed. Reasons for engaging in this work, arguments against treatment of smoking along with another drug, characteristics of drug users who smoke, and treatment content implications are reviewed. Outcomes of 24 studies are presented. It is concluded that the future of research and practice in this arena should include facilitating smoking cessation among those early in recovery.

RESUMEN

Se analizan la documentación que existe sobre el dejar de fumar, para aquellas personas que se están recuperando de otro tipo de abuso de drogas. Se analizan las razones por las cuales se realiza este trabajo, los argumentos que existen en contra del tratamiento para dejar de fumar así como también para dejar otras drogas, las características de las personas que abusan drogas y fuman, y las implicancias del tratamiento. Se presentan los resultados de 24 estudios. Se concluye que, en el futuro, la investigación y la práctica en esta área debería incluir que se facilite que aquellas personas que están en la etapa temprana del proceso de recuperación dejen de fumar.

RéSUMé

La documentation sur la cessation du tabagisme pour less toxicomanes en phase de réadaptation est étudiée. Les raisons d'une telle mise en œuvre, les arguments contre le traitement due tabagisme en conjonction avec d'autres substances créant l'accoutumance, les caractéristiques des toxicomanes qui sont également fumeurs ainsi que les implications pour le traitement sont passés en revue. Les résultats de 24 études sont présentés. ll en est conclu qu'il serait bon, à l'avenir, que les recherches et les pratiques dans ce domaine fassent de la cessation du tabagisme un élément intégrant de la phase de réadaptation dès son départ.

Steve Sussman

Steve Sussman, Ph.D., FAAHB, received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1984. He served on a clinical psychology residency at Jackson Veterans Administra-tion and University of Mississippi Medical Centers and now is a Professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and Psychology, Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research at the University of Southern California. He has published over 170 articles in the area of drug use prevention and cessation. Sub-areas of particular focus are psychosocial prediction of tobacco and other drug use, drug use prevention and cessation, and other research with high-risk populations including placing an emphasis on the use of program development methods. Recent projects include Project Towards No Tobacco Use (TNT), a tobacco use prevention program which is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “Program that Works,” and a U.S. Department of Education Exemplary Program. Also included are Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND) which, along with Project TNT is considered a model program by the Centers for Substance Abuse Prevention, and Project EX, which is the largest and most successful teen tobacco use cessation experimental trial to date.
