Abstract
An idealized model of a competitive neural network is studied to illustrate some of the important features which determine the large-scale behaviour of self-organizing networks. Simulations of the model are presented. A performance measure is introduced to obtain a more systematic understanding of the effects of changing the parameters of the model. Theoretical attempts to predict the behaviour of this type of network are described.
