A memory model with novel behaviour in sequential learning

Abstract

We consider a memory model with bounded synaptic weights and an asymmetry in the strengthening and weakening of the synapses, and study the effects of varying the fraction of non-zero initial weights. The cases of synapses connected extremely dilutely and fully are both considered. Novel phenomena such as initial depression, initial lapse, medial depression and medial lapse are reported. The relevance of this work to biology and the modelling of short-term memory is also discussed.
