Summary
The results are given of dose-finding studies in 386 women in whom single-dose treatments with tinidazole at doses of 1500 mg., 1600 mg., 1800 mg. and 2000 mg. were tested. Experience with a single-dose treatment with 2000 mg. tinidazole by mouth in 134 patients in Switzerland is presented in detail.
Treatment was successful in 126 women (94%). The success rate remained practically the same (93.5 %) at the second follow-up examination. Normal physiological conditions in the vagina were rapidly restored. Dbderleiris lactobacillus was present in practically normal quantities in nearly 80% of the women treated, and at the same time the number of leucocytes in the vaginal secretion was greatly reduced. Pathogens in the vaginal secretion disappeared or were greatly reduced in number (in 80 % of cases).
Side-effects occurred in only 7.5 % of the women treated and were mostly mild in nature. No cases ofleucopaenia were observed.
It is concluded that single-dose therapy with tinidazole is a rapid, simple method, not only for the woman, but is also most suitable for the partner and more acceptable to him.
