Summary

Eighty-seven patients admitted to a geriatric assessment unit were allocated at random either to treatment with a lactulose preparation (? Duphalac') or to no treatment at all, to assess the effect of routine administration of a laxative on the comfort and well-being of the patients, and in reducing the amount of time required by the nursing staff to treat faecal incontinence. It was found that, in particular, the number of articles soiled by faeces were significantly reduced in the lactulose-treated group, and the nursing time spent on incontinent patients was reduced.
