Summary
Prazosin is a new antihypertensive agent which has been shown in a number of trials to be effective in the treatment of all grades of hypertension, both essential and renal hypertension. Studies have shown it to be well suited for concomitant treatment with diuretics and beta-blockers. The frequency of side-effects with prazosin is relatively small. Syncope has been reported on rare occasions.
The author considers that it is too early to assess the final place of prazosin in the treatment of hypertension but on present evidence it would appear to be an effective alternative to methyldopa, clonidine and particularly to hydrallazine.
