A behavioural and pharmacological treatment for Obesity with a 3-year follow-up

Pages 255-259 | Accepted 20 Oct 1978, Published online: 21 Aug 2008

Summary

A comparison was carried out between three groups of obese patients, randomly allocated to a control group or to receive Id-weeks' treatment with fenfluramine (up to 120 mg daily) or by behavioural techniques. The results showed that fenfluramine was effective in reducing weight, but the effects were not as great as in the behavioural group, and stopped when treatment was withdrawn. At the 1-year follow-up, the behavioural group was the only group with a significantly lower mean weight. Although this group still showed a mean weight reduction at the 3-year follow-up, the reduction was no longer significant.
