Abstract
Chronic fatigue syndrome [CFS] exhibits many of the same features as fibromyalgia. Defining both conditions rests on subjective complaints and excluding confounding problems. It is doubtful that either is a new condition. Recent workers have emphasized potential roles of viruses in the etiology of CFS but the data are inconsistent, at best. The approach to CFS should entail education, symptomatic treatment, antidepressants, graded exercise, and generous support.
