National Bias and Cultural Favorability in Scholarly Book Reviews

An Analysis of Selected Journals in Modern Languages and Literatures

Pages 51-61 | Published online: 21 Oct 2008

Abstract

To explore the question of national bias in book reviewing, statistics are presented for 1838 reviews taken from selected scholarly journals in the modern languages. These data fail to support the contention that British reviewers show bias against American books. The study then considers favorability at the national level and at the level of the individual journal cultural effects which might give rise to the perception of anti-American bias.
