Abstract
Anemia in cancer patients is frequent but often under-recognized and under-treated. This may be related to misconceptions about the impact of anemia on cancer patients and ill-defined guidelines for treatment, as well as the inadequacies of current therapy. Darbepoetin alfa, a novel erythropoiesis-stimulating protein with a longer serum half-life than epoetin (α and β), is approved to treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. Most recently darbepetin alfa has received approval by the FDA in USA for the treatment of anemia associated with myelosuppressive chemotherapy and approval in the EU is expected soon. Clinical trials in cancer patients indicate that darbepoetin alfa effectively and safely alleviates anemia in patients receiving chemotherapy. A Phase II trial also indicates that darbepoetin alfa is effective in patients who are not receiving chemotherapy. Thus, darbepoetin alfa has the potential to improve supportive care and thereby, cancer patients’ quality of life, and might also impact on treatment outcome.
