Abstract
Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are amongst the most popular means to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Since their introduction to the US market in 1960, the variety and the accessibility of COCs has increased significantly. Their popularity is due to the fact that they are an effective, safe and reversible option for most women throughout the reproductive years. The popularity of COCs has increased over the past several decades. However, there are risks associated with COC use, including cardiovascular and thromboembolic events. Over time, the concentrations of both the estrogen and progestin components have undergone significant reductions and various new progestins have been developed in order to increase acceptability and safety.
